Pet Safe Candles: A Guide to Non-Toxic Home Fragrance for Dogs & Cats

I have a busy rescue dog at home who runs the house (and thinks every delivery truck is a personal invasion). Because she spends her life at nose-level with everything in our home, I am extremely careful about what I burn. One of the most common questions I get from other pet parents is: “Are scented candles safe for my dog or cat?”

The short answer is: Yes, but you have to choose the right ingredients.

Not all candles are created equal. Many mass-produced candles use cheap chemicals that can irritate a pet’s sensitive respiratory system.

If you want to enjoy a fresh-smelling home without putting your fur baby at risk, you need to look for pet safe candles that are free from paraffin and phthalates. Here is your guide to keeping your home smelling good and your pets feeling great.

1. Avoid Paraffin Wax

Most cheap candles are made from Paraffin, which is a byproduct of petroleum (crude oil). When burned, it can release soot and chemicals into your home. According to the EPA’s research on candles and indoor air quality, burning candles with lead-free wicks and vegetable-based waxes (like soy) can help reduce indoor soot.

The Zyndl Difference: We use 100% Vegan Soy Wax with a small amount of coconut oil. It is plant-based, biodegradable, and burns much cleaner than paraffin, producing 90% less soot.

2. Say No to Phthalates

Phthalates are chemicals often used in fragrance oils to make the scent last longer. However, they have been linked to hormone disruption in both humans and animals.

At Zyndl, we have a strict Phthalate-Free Promise. We only use clean fragrance oils that are safe to burn around your family and pets.

3. Watch the Essential Oils

While we love natural scents, some essential oils(like Tea Tree, Wintergreen, and pure Peppermint) can be toxic to dogs and cats if ingested or inhaled in high concentrations. You can view the full list of toxic plants and oils at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center to stay informed.

We carefully formulate our blends (like our Lavenders) to be balanced and safe for ambient burning.

4. The “Chaos Factor”: When to Ditch the Flame

We have talked about toxins, but we also need to talk about physics.

Some pets are just chaos in fur coats. You might have a cat who insists on walking across the counter (no matter how many times you scold them) and knocking objects down with an impertinent flick of their tail. Or maybe you have a dog who isn’t afraid of fire and is dangerously close to singing their own fur for fun.

If this sounds like your house, an open flame might not be the best idea.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy our scents! I highly recommend using a Candle Warmer Lamp.

  • How it works: You place your unlit candle under the lamp, and the heat from the bulb melts the wax from the top down.
  • The Benefit: You get the full fragrance release of our soy wax without any fire hazard. No smoke, no soot, and no panic if the cat knocks it over.
  • Affordable: You can easily find stylish candle warmer lamps on Amazon for less than $20.

This is the safest way to enjoy a Zyndl Candle if your pets are prone to mischief.

The Bottom Line

You don’t have to give up a good-smelling home just because you have pets. You just need to choose quality ingredients.
